Heroes
Iain H. Murray
Publisher: Banner of Truth
|
|
The Bible no more knows a separate class of heroes than it does of saints. Because of Jesus Christ, every Christian is extraordinary and attains to glory. Yet grace so shines in some (as in the portraits of Hebrews 11), that it lightens the path of many. As A.W. Tozer could write, 'Next to the Holy Scriptures, the greatest aid to the life of faith may be Christian biography.'

Heroes is more a straight forward biography. In his writing the author pays special attention to the thinking of the persons he writes about. For example, he writes on the thinking of the great evangelist George Whitfield on Christian unity. He also writes on lesser known figures such as Charles and Mary Colcock Jones, who ministered so much to the slaves particularly in the south (USA).
Heroes is highly recommended. The book is in hardback and is published by the Banner of Truth Trust.

Sketches from Church History
An illustrated account of 20 centuries of Christ's Power
S.M. Houghton
Plublisher: Banner of Truth
|
|
This book outlines the thrilling story of the onward march of the Church of Christ from the earliest times to the end of the nineteenth century.
It is not a dry-as-dust account of long-forgotten events and controversies, but rather a moving record of those who undertook the adventure of faith before us and, through their courage and steadfastness, left an example for the church in every age.
Reading of the exploits of those who have gone before us, though times of prosperity and times of persecution, should stimulate, warn, and encourage the church in our own age to persevere in the same path, and obtain the same everlasting reward.

If you are looking for a good start to delve into history, this is a good recommendation that also allows you to expand upon certain areas on your own. A student workbook is also available to accompany this book by Rebecca Frawley.
